Barbara Carney-Coston is an award-winning writer, media producer and educator. She began her career as a teacher and then worked in educational television, producing programs for public
television, The Learning Channel and a variety of private clients. For National Geographic, she produced many web features, including one about the Underground Railroad that won a Parents’
Choice award and was designated an ALA Notable Website.
Her middle-grade historical fiction novel, To the Copper Country—Mihaela’s Journey was published by Wayne State University Press in September 2017, and was named the 2018 Gold Medal Winner for Children’s Fiction by the Midwest Independent Publishing Association. To the Copper Country also recently received a 2018 State History Award for Outstanding Michigan History Publication--Children and Youth by the Historical Society of Michigan.
She has also written for Highlights for Children, Hopscotch, and Washington Parent magazines.
Barbara loves doing school workshops and presentations. She enjoyed a “virtual visit” with fifth grade students in Montague, Michigan and can discuss how her book can be used in classrooms.
