Mediate, Maneuver and Utilize the Essential Practices in Literacy in your Media Center
With a new state law around 3rd grade retention and pressure on districts, there is heavy demand on teachers to improve literacy skills.   Because of this pressure, a group of educators, as part of the General Education Leadership Network, formed the Early Literacy Task Force. This group has used education research to identify the practices that matter most to literacy development.  Every educator, including media specialists, has an important role to play in this effort. It is only working together that we can truly improve outcomes for ALL our Michigan youth.
This session will focus on the Literacy Essentials, a set of key guiding documents developed by the Early Literacy Task Force that frame our education-focused approach to the literacy challenge.  Participants will learn about the specific instructional practices that, based on their effectiveness through research, should be happening in every classroom, every day for every child. We'll also spend time on the school-level essentials, a framework for the kinds of organizational activities that take place in schools that are successful in changing literacy outcomes.  We'll discuss the important and varied roles that media specialists can play in these efforts and solicit feedback on additional activities that would be beneficial to coordinate at a state level.

Next Gen Science Standards and School Librarians
In this pre-conference session we will explore the Michigan Science Standards (NGSS) and what they mean for media specialists in Michigan. In particular, we will dive deeply into the literacy essentials and how science can support these standards by appropriately integrating non-fiction, grade-appropriate texts into science learning. This will include learning about and then using the science and engineering practices and the crosscutting concepts to better connect multiple forms of text to science classrooms and science learning. This session will be interactive and will allow you to leave with some great tools for supporting science learning.

Research breakouts teach students how to use library resources such as Destiny, MeL, and GVRL, how to find books on the shelf in the physical library, and how to find reliable internet resources. As school librarians are also tech integrationists and collaborators, librarians can work with classroom teachers to create electronic breakouts as a replacement to tests and quizzes, embedding many different literacy skills into the breakouts themselves (for example, my 7th grade Social Studies breakout included maps).Session will explain what electronic breakouts are, how I used them, how to make them, and time to explore.
